Singaporeans love their food as much as the next guy – if the next guy were also a Singaporean who would queue two hours for the latest viral eat.

So here’s to all you foodies – the MICHELIN Guide Singapore has just unveiled the 2024 Bib Gourmand selection with eleven new eateries added.

If you’d like to check out last year’s list before prepping your stomach for this year’s eats, click here for 2023’s Bib Gourmand list.

MICHELIN Terminology

With these new eateries and establishments moving from Selected to Bib Gourmand status, you might wonder – what’s the difference between the Bib Gourmand and the coveted MICHELIN stars?

For starters, MICHELIN stars are awarded based on five criteria:

  1. Quality of ingredients used
  2. Mastery of flavour and cooking techniques
  3. The personality of the chef in the cuisine
  4. Harmony of flavours
  5. Consistency between visits

On the other hand, the Bib Gourmand is a “rating that recognises friendly establishments that serve good food at moderate prices.”

In essence, according to Fine Dining Lovers, “To win a MICHELIN star, a restaurant should serve unique, boundary-pushing cuisine, while a Bib Gourmand is more likely to offer comforting favourites at their very best.”

These Bib Gourmand eateries fall within the $ and $$ price ranges, specifically in the “on a budget” and “a moderate spend” categories.

Now that we have sorted that out, let’s look at the eateries that recently attained Bib Gourmand status.

Jalan Sultan Prawn Mee

Address: 2 Jalan Ayer, Lorong 1 Geylang, S389141

Opening hours: 0800-1530 hrs (Open every day except Tuesdays)

This store has been in operation for more than 70 years and still maintains a decent crowd.

Serving aromatic dry and soup prawn mee, the MICHELIN Guide has described its dishes as “loaded with natural umami.”

The pork rib prawn mee is its most popular dish – and I can only imagine how fragrant that would be.

The dry noodles are served in sambal “with heaps of fried scallion, adding depth.”

It’s only the first food place and already my mouth is watering.

You can choose from three different kinds of noodles to pair beautifully with the juicy prawns given.

Ru Ji Kitchen

Address: Holland Drive Market & Food Centre, #02-28/29, 44 Holland Drive, S270044

Opening hours: 0700-1300 hrs (Open every day except Mondays)

To all you bak chor mee and/or fishball noodle lovers, this one is for you.

These two adjoining stalls serve up soup and dry noodles with the usual yummy toppings – minced pork, pork balls and/or fishballs.

The fishballs, however, are handmade yellowtail fishballs and are as people say, super QQ, becoming popular amongst the stall’s patrons.

They do close after noon so if you’d like a bowl, it might be best to head down early.

Chef Kang’s Noodle House

Address: Blk C, #01-34, Jackson Square, 11 Lorong 3 Toa Payoh, S319579

Opened in September 2018, this hawker stall within the canteen of Jackson Square has since been serving up delicious bowls of wanton mee.

According to their website, they use noodles that are a specially imported “bamboo pole (jook sing)” type from Hong Kong, which has less of a strong alkaline taste.

Their menu is simple, including items like noodles with char siew and wanton, noodles with shredded abalone, char siew and wanton and pork belly char siew.

As a wanton mee lover myself, I’m this close to heading over to grab a bowl right now – but I shall exercise self-control.

Dehli Lahori

Address: Tekka Centre, #01-266, 665 Buffalo Road, 210665, Singapore

Opening hours: 0900-2300 hrs (Open every day)

Important note: Cash only

Cost: $

Dehli Lahori offers a selection of Indian-Pakistani food but they are more popularly known for their charcoal-baked naan.

This traditional method of baking naan makes them fluffy and crispy all at the same time, resulting in what the MICHELIN guide calls a “loyal following.”

Previously located at Jurong East, some highlights include the grilled-to-order seekh kebab and chicken tikka masala.

The stall also offers tasty vegetarian dishes, so you don’t have to worry – there will be something for you.

Opening hours: 1730-2230 hrs (Mon-Wed); 1130-1500 and 1730-2230 hrs (Thu-Sun)

You might have seen this beautiful, aesthetic white house along East Coast Park trending on social media at one point.

Fico is an Italian restaurant right by the sea for you to enjoy spectacular ocean views and the sound of waves as you tuck into your meal.

You may choose between indoor and outdoor seating, depending on the type of vibe you are looking for.

With our first air-conditioned location on the list, expect the prices to go a little higher with Fico.

However, you can hardly complain about that, with the delicious focaccia and pasta made from scratch.

Han Kee

Address: Amoy Street Food Centre, #02-129, 7 Maxwell Road, S069111

Opening hours: 1100-1500 hrs (Open every day except Saturdays and Sundays)

Important note: Cash only

Cost: $

Here’s one for those looking for rainy-day comfort food – fish soup.

Located at Amoy Street Food Centre, Han Kee boasts long queues as people jostle to get their fish soup fix before the stall closes at 3 pm.

According to the MICHELIN guide, the fish soup can be eaten on its own or together with porridge or bee hoon.

Aside from the regular fish slices, you can also enjoy the fish head if that’s your thing.

Jason Penang Cuisine

Address: ABC Brickworks Market & Food Centre, #01-112, Blk 6 Jalan Bukit Merah, S150006

Opening hours: 1100-1400 hrs and 1730-2000 hrs (Open every day except Mondays and Tuesdays)

Important note: Cash only

Cost: $

Serving up Penang delights like char kway teow, Jason Penang Cuisine is best known for its tangy Penang assam laksa.

Jason Khaw, the owner of the stall, used to work as a chef for the British High Commissioner – so standards must be HIGH too.

As you might already know, Penang laksa is very different from the laksa we’re used to, with a unique flavour profile.

Jason Penang Cuisine uses yellowtail fish for its broth which adds to the depth of the soup base.

However, the MICHELIN guide points out that their use of fresh mint makes the taste just that much more distinctive.

Margaret Drive Sin Kee Chicken Rice

Address: Block 40, Stall 5, #01-39, Holland Drive, S270040

Opening hours: 1100-2000 hrs (Open every day except Mondays)

Cost: $

The original Sin Kee Chicken Rice Stall was opened by Mr Leong Fook Wing back in 1971.

After it had ceased operations in 2015, one of Mr Leong’s sons and his business partner relaunched the chicken rice stall and it has come back stronger than ever.

The chicken served is juicy and pairs well with the aromatic chicken oil rice.

Choose to eat the dish with their ground ginger sauce or maybe a side of gizzards for a hearty meal.

MP Thai (Vision Exchange)

Address: Vision Exchange, #02-41/42, 2 Venture Drive, S608526

Opening hours: 1130-2100 hrs (Open every day)

Cost: $$

With generous portions and affordable prices, it is no wonder MP Thai consistently attracts a crowd.

The owner and kitchen are all Thai, so the authenticity of this place goes without saying.

Aside from the classic tom yum soup that opens up your appetite, their barbeque items like the squid are also a must-try.

It is, however, recommended to get a reservation should you want to land a table to try their delicious Thai fanfare.

Song Fish Soup

Address: Clementi 448 Food Centre, #01-38, 448 Clementi Ave 3, S120448

Opening hours: 1030-1400 hrs and 1700-2000 hrs (Open every day)

Important note: Cash only

Cost: $

The second fish soup place to be added to the list, Song Fish Soup offers a variety of fish options – from blanched sliced fish to deep-fried fish and fish maw.

You can also select other seafood options like clams and shrimp.

The comforting bowl of fish soup can also be elevated by adding a fried egg to the already rich soup base filled with bitter gourd, tofu and tomatoes.

Zhup Zhup

Address: #01-01, 458 MacPherson Road, S368176

Opening hours: 1100-2100 hrs (Open every day except Monday)

Cost: $

Formerly known as One Prawn & Co, Zhup Zhup serves delicious dishes in clay pot bowls to retain an earthy and hearty taste.

Most notably, their signature prawn noodles are a crowd favourite, of which you can select four types of noodles.

With a generous portion of prawn heads, it is no wonder you are recommended to book ahead to cut your waiting time.

The official full selection of the MICHELIN Guide Singapore 2024 will be released on 25 June 2024.

The official MICHELIN Stars will also be announced at the same time on the official website and their mobile app.

I can only imagine the delectable eats that will be featured – I can only wish I had a bigger stomach to try them all.

Over in TikTok, there’s a drama involving property agents that’s caused by us. Here’s what happened:
