Imagine volunteering out of goodwill, only to be wrongly accused of something you didn’t do—and even getting attacked by a student.
That’s exactly what happened at a community centre in Singapore.
A voluntary tutoring session in Ang Mo Kio turned chaotic when a 16-year-old student volunteer faced accusations of slapping a 7-year-old pupil, leading to a physical confrontation that required police intervention.
Here’s what happened.
16YO Volunteer Tutor in AMK Allegedly Got Attacked by a 7YO Student
The teenager, who chose to stay anonymous, was volunteering with Beyond Social Services, teaching primary school students every Wednesday or Thursday from 7 PM to 9 PM at a community centre.
According to Shin Min Daily News, on 30 October around 8 PM, about 20 primary school students attended the session.
However, the situation spiraled out of control when 10 male students started misbehaving, blocking their male supervisor in a classroom by standing on both sides of a sliding door.
As the teenager tried to stop the mischief, a 7-year-old girl suddenly burst into tears, claiming the volunteer had slapped her.
“I hadn’t even seen her. Most students by the sliding door were boys. I was shocked when I turned around and saw her crying, holding her cheek and telling others I had slapped her,” the volunteer told Shin Min Daily News.
The situation worsened when the volunteer approached to check on the girl.
The young student allegedly pulled the teenager’s hair and threw a whiteboard eraser and shoes at her. “She hit my back with an electrical cord. I tried keeping my distance,” the volunteer said.
The male supervisor emerged from the classroom after hearing the commotion and grabbed the girl’s hand to control the situation.
However, the girl complained that he held her too tightly.
Things Got Out of Control
The incident then escalated into a hair-pulling fight between the volunteer and the student.
Later, the girl’s mother and relatives arrived, confronting the teenager. “Someone grabbed my neck and pushed me into the tuition room,” the volunteer recounted.
The supervisor also sustained injuries while trying to mediate, including a black eye.
Both the volunteer and supervisor sought medical treatment, returning home at 6 AM the next day.
Photos provided showed the volunteer experiencing facial twitches, while the supervisor suffered bruising around his forehead and right eye.
The volunteer’s aunt expressed distress over the incident, saying, “She volunteered out of goodwill but ended up being falsely accused and attacked.”
The teenager has since left the volunteer organization.
Beyond Social Services responded to media queries, expressing regret over the incident. A spokesperson confirmed they’re maintaining contact with all parties involved and providing counseling support.
The organization emphasized their focus on creating a safe environment for communication.
The police have confirmed receiving a report and investigations are ongoing.
The male supervisor, now resting at home, declined to comment further about the incident but mentioned his injuries were not severe.
