Pokémon, Dragon Age, Final Fantasy: video games would be unthinkable today without the role-playing genre.
Fans immerse themselves in strange environments and defeat dragons and monsters in huge worlds that can offer weeks of challenging fun and exciting stories. We look at three of the current best in the open-world genre.
1. Fallout 4
Telling darkly humorous stories set in a post-apocalypse world, the Fallout series is a classic that has been around since the late 1990s. The latest version has sold more than 25 million copies and takes place decades after the nuclear war that devastated the planet.
Some survivors have hidden themselves in vaults underground while others live on the surface and fight with gangs, mutants and man-eating ghouls. Players take on the role of a vault resident who is looking for his kidnapped family on the surface.

Fallout 4 offers everything that makes a great open-world role-playing game (RPG). In the style of a first-person shooter, you have to fight against numerous dangers in a huge game world, become more resilient and arm yourself with weapons. Later, you can even establish small settlements.
