GenAI job postings doubled in Singapore despite tight job market

A news article by Singapore Business Review reported today (May 28) that Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) jobs have doubled in Singapore.

The report came after recruitment platform Indeed reported that one in every 190 job postings in Singapore involves generative AI, noting that the posting share has almost doubled over the last three months.

According to another news report by HRWorld, the share of Singapore job postings mentioning GenAI is 4.3, 4.7, and 6.5 times higher than those in the United States (US), the United Kingdom (UK), and Australia, respectively.

Speaking on the findings, Callam Pickering, APAC Senior Economist at Indeed, noted that Singapore seemed to have embraced new technologies faster than its global counterparts. “It is [in its] early stages, but Singapore might be establishing itself as a hub for GenAI expertise,” he said in an article.

What about Singapore’s job market as a whole?

Including those not related to generative AI, job postings in Singapore on Indeed increased by 0.4 per cent in April from March. While Singapore job postings are now 9.6 per cent lower than a year ago, they are still 62 per cent higher than their level before the pandemic.

Pickering stated that Singapore’s labour market “remains incredibly tight,” noting the intense competition for talent across various industries. Despite that, he also shared that job posting volumes have increased, expressing his optimism for jobs available for job seekers across different backgrounds and experience levels.

Overall, unemployment in Singapore remains low and skill-shortages are common. Recruitment is still very challenging, but owing to a 9.6% decline in job postings over the past year we can conclude that it isn’t as difficult as it was a year ago.
