As popular as K-pop groups might be, the sad truth is that some idols seem to draw criticism no matter what they do.
Girl group IVE, made up of members Gaeul, Yujin, Rei, Wonyoung, Liz, and Leeseo, have sparked quite the debate after they were seen eating burgers with forks.
The original video, titled ‘IVE Tries Popular American Food’, was posted on the group’s official YouTube channel two weeks ago.
Since then, clips of the girls trying burgers from popular fast food chain In-N-Out have been circulating on TikTok, with many judging them for using plastic forks to pick out ingredients from the burger to sample. Only Yujin and Rei were seen eating the burger with their hands, you know, like most of us do.
“Why are they eating like that?” was a popular question raised by many netizens.
Some also criticised them for “wasting food” and being “attention-seeking”.
“If you’re gonna eat a burger like that, then just don’t eat it?” wrote one netizen.
However, many others have spoken up in IVE’s defense.
A popular explanation was that the girls were using forks as they did not want to mess up their make-up.
Some also agreed that the process of eating a burger can be very messy, and the girls simply did not want to look “unglam” on camera and give haters the opportunity to take screenshots which could make them look bad.
“People use chopsticks to eat chips sometimes. I cut up my burgers with a knife before eating, there’s literally nothing wrong with what they’re doing here,” asserted one netizen, while others said that they have the same practice.
One netizen also suggested that some of the girls could have been put on strict diets by their agency.
The clips clearly drew divisive sentiments from netizens, but what do you think?
The girls, who are all under the age of 23, already live much of their lives under a microscope. Shouldn’t they be left alone to eat burgers the way they want to?
