In December last year, South Korean singer Lee Hong Gi aka Hongki opened up about his rare medical condition on a variety show.
The 34-year-old shared that he has lived with hidradenitis suppurativa (HS), a painful and long-term skin condition since he was in high school.
HS causes scarring and lumps of flesh to form. It is known to form near hair follicles usually around the groin, buttocks, breast, and armpits.
There is currently no cure for HS though cases in Korea are rare, with only around 10,000 incidents reported.
The F.T. Island member said he has since undergone multiple surgeries, which has left his buttocks with heavy scarring and folds of excess skin. He also added that he wants a “new butt”.
According to Hongki his condition worsens when his testosterone levels drop drastically.
He also said he found it embarrassing to talk about living with HS as the scarring extends to his privates.
During the interview, the singer recalled the time a boil burst, spewing blood and pus profusely and causing him extreme pain.
Since then, he has always carried an extra pair of underwear with him.
“It’s because of this condition, I had to leave in the middle of an appearance or reschedule concerts,” said Hongki.
“During those times, I couldn’t move or sing. Even taking flights was extremely uncomfortable,” he added.
“Many people, even my bandmates thought I was making excuses,” said Hongki.
Hongki hopes by sharing his condition others in similar predicaments will feel less terrible about themselves.
“Remember, it’s not your fault. There is no need to blame yourself or feel embarrassed,” he said.
