On 13 July, an assassination attempt was carried out on former President Donald Trump during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania.
Although the former President managed to walk away with only his right ear hurt by a bullet, others, such as 50-year-old Corey Comperatore were not so lucky, losing his life while attempting to protect others.
Who is Corey Comperatore?
Mr Comperatore, a volunteer firefighter, was an “avid supporter” of Donald Trump, according to his family, and had attended the rally with his family.
When shots rang, Mr Comperatore dove onto his family members in an attempt to protect them, unfortunately resulting in his death.
Following the incident, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro managed to speak with his wife and two daughters whom he had left behind.
According to his family, Mr Comperatore “went to church every Sunday”, “loved his community” and above all “loved his family”.
Mr Comperatore’s fellow volunteer firefighters have hailed him as a hero, and have attributed his quick instincts during the incident to his work with the fire department.
His heroic qualities have also been echoed by his neighbours, with one of his neighbours stating that Mr Comperatore was “a hero that [he] was happy to have as a neighbour”.
Apart from being a fire chief in Buffalo Township, he was also selected as a future trustee of Cabot Church in 2021. He was also extremely generous, and would donate money to community members in need. Last Christmas, he had even donated a whole ham to a single mother with five children.
A day after the incident, long-stemmed roses could be seen laid across his front lawn, in remembrance of the local hero.
The governor has since directed flags to be flown at half-mast in Mr Comperatore’s memory.
Two More Notable Victims
Two other individuals have also been reported to be critically injured, following Saturday’s incident.
57-year-old David Dutch, a commandant in The Marine Corps League of Pennsylvania, was shot in the liver and chest and his since undergone two surgeries, according to Vice Commandant Matt Popovich on Facebook.
The other victim is 74-year-old James Copenhaver. Both victims have now been listed to be in stable conditions.
President Joe Biden has since extended his condolences to Mr Comperatore’s family and “pray[ed] for the full recovery “ of those who were injured.
