Ang Mo Kio Resident Lets Pigeons Into Flat To Feed Them Daily

Some people love animals and dedicate their time to feeding stray cats. Others prefer to spend their time feeding our feathered friend, the pigeon (much to the dismay of other residents).

A man living at Block 559 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 10 has allegedly been opening the window of his HDB flat to invite pigeons into his home to feed them every morning.

Neighbours are concerned that this behaviour contributes to bird infestation in the neighbourhood.

They also said that the cars parked downstairs are hit by bird droppings daily.

Around 20 Pigeons Gather Outside The HDB Flat Daily

A video of the man’s alleged actions has been shared with Shin Min Daily News. In the video, around 20 pigeons were spotted hovering outside the resident’s window.

The doors and windows of the flat were shut. A woman who lived above the man’s flat noticed the pigeons and tried to use a rag to chase them away.

While doing so, the man’s window suddenly opened. The window was closed immediately after the pigeons swarmed into the flat.

Windows Covered With Bird Droppings

The alleged culprit behind the pigeon feedings is believed to be living alone and rarely talks to his neighbours.

Neighbours also noted that the flock of pigeons have become accustomed to coming to the flat to find food.

This was reiterated by another resident who mentioned that the birds would gather outside the man’s window at around 8am each morning.

When a reporter from Shin Min Daily News visited the block of flats, they noticed that the unit’s windows were covered with a large amount of stains from bird droppings.

One of the man’s neighbours also said that she had to chase the pigeons away before hanging clothes to prevent her garments from being stained with bird droppings.

According to residents, the bird infestation problem has been a persistent issue for residents of the block for “quite some time”.

Enforcement Action Will Be Taken Against Bird Feeders

In response to Shin Min Daily News, National Parks Board’s Senior Director of Wildlife Management, How Choon Beng said that they have received complaints of bird infestation in the area.

They are currently working with the Ang Mo Kio Town Council to manage the bird infestation.

They also advise residents not to feed birds, “NParks will continue to monitor the bird infestation situation and take enforcement action against those who feed birds.”

Under the Wildlife Act, first-time offenders who feed wild animals can be fined up to S$5,000, while repeat offenders can be fined up to S$10,000.

NParks said that they will follow up on complaints of illegal bird feeding and are taking enforcement measures such as on-site monitoring and the use of CCTV cameras.

It added that rock pigeons are a non-native species in Singapore and can cause hygiene problems if they were to gather in large flocks.
