Singapore’s TechLaw.Fest this year announced an unexpected guest in the form of Emma Watson.

The famous English actress is one of many speakers set to speak at the two-day event, taking place on 11 and 12 September at the Sands Expo and Convention Centre in Singapore.

Emma Watson to Talk Diversity at Singapore Tech Event

While yet to be advertised on their social media, the TechLaw.Fest website lists her as a speaker on Day 2 (12 September).

She is slated to speak from 9:30 am to 10:15 am on “Diversity, Inclusion, and the Future.”

You might be wondering why an actress famous for roles in films such as the Harry Potter franchise and Beauty and the Beast would be speaking at a tech conference.

Well, for one, Ms Watson has been a constant advocate for diversity and inclusivity for years, especially on the topic of gender equality.

She famously delivered a speech at the UN Women’s HeForShe gender equality campaign in 2014.

On top of that, she will be speaking alongside her father, Chris Watson, a major expert in communications law. He is Chair of the Management Board of Technology, Media & Communications at CMS, an international law firm.

It remains unconfirmed if Ms Emma Watson will be physically on stage in Singapore for her segment or participating through video call, though she is listed as “Main Stage Speaker” on the website.

Singapore Minister Edwin Tong to be Present Too

Besides Ms Watson, the event includes both tech industry experts and major Singaporean figures, including Minister for Culture, Community and Youth Edwin Tong.

The topic of artificial intelligence is fittingly a major theme in the tech event, with nearly every single talk on Day 1 (11 September) being about it in some way.

Several other notable speakers include Singaporean musician Inch Chua, a solicitor represented by an NFT monkey, and what looks to be a golden retriever (plus a human tagging along).

Anyone interested must first register a pass on their website to be able to participate in the event.
