“We Don’t Say Cheesy Things To Each Other”: Brandon Wong On His Close Friendship With Chen Hanwei, Thomas Ong, Cavin Soh & Yao Wenlong

Last month, it was announced that former Mediacorp actor Thomas Ong, 55, would be returning to acting after a four-year hiatus.

He will be starring alongside Chen Hanwei, 54, Brandon Wong, 52, Cavin Soh, 53, and Yao Wenlong, 53 in upcoming Mediacorp drama I Believe I Can Fly.

In a recent interview with Shinmin Daily, Brandon spoke about the camaraderie between the five actors.

The guys are close and would often meet up for meals. According to Brandon, Hanwei is the de-facto leader, as he’s often the one to bring ideas to the table, and is very good at taking care of others.

Brandon, on the other hand, admits to being a ‘follower’ and is considered a junior in the group.

“In my opinion, friendships between men, we don’t usually say cheesy or sweet things to each other, but when we require help, the others will never fail to show up,” he said.

They are also able to chat about any topic under the sun. “We can discuss our scripts and characters very seriously, but can also talk about meaningless nonsense together, where we joke around and make fun of each other,” said Brandon.

Filming for I Believe I Can Fly recently took place in Hat Yai, Thailand.

Brandon revealed that the cast would leave for work before dawn, and only get back to their hotels after nightfall. They hardly had time to explore the place, and only gathered after work for dinner.

Despite the tough work schedule, Brandon enjoyed filming overseas.

“The camaraderie between the team is especially strong when we work overseas. During these few days in Hat Yai, you can see that the cast and crew are all working hand-in-hand in order to do their jobs well. I’m excited to see what we can create under these conditions,” he said.

Though they have both been actors for over two decades, Brandon is working with Thomas for the first time. And he’s already full of praise for the latter.

According to Brandon, Thomas takes good care of others, and really treats him like a “bro”.
