NRF Singapore boosts data capabilities to advance healthcare – Data and Analytics

National Research Foundation Singapore (NRF) is partnering with Health Data Research UK to use data science for improvements in healthcare, research and innovation.

One of the primary objectives of the partnership is to facilitate the rapid sharing of data and insights, particularly in response to emergencies such as pandemics and natural disasters.

By utilising open-source tools and adhering to open standards, both organisations plan to enhance their collaborative efforts, enabling quicker access to critical health data.

The partners will share their expertise and explore opportunities to use health data research to address pressing healthcare challenges for better healthcare systems worldwide.

NRF’s CEO John Lim said the country aims to enhance patient outcomes by leveraging insights from the Asian genome and data-driven healthcare solutions.

“The advancements in health data analytics and artificial intelligence open new frontiers in precision and predictive healthcare,” he added.

The partnership also aims to promote interdisciplinary research, bringing together experts from various fields to address complex health issues. It represents joint efforts of multiple Institutions including The University of Nottingham, Swansea University Medical School, the Agency for Science Technology and Research (A*STAR) and the Trusted Research and Real-world Utilisation and Sharing Tech (TRUST) Office, MOHT.

Key focus areas

The HDR UK-NRF partnership will focus on several priority areas including trustworthy data use and research.

Committed to best practices in information governance and public engagement, NRF aims to promote safe health data usage to build public trust.

It will also focus on cross-border research initiatives, leveraging open data standards and federated analysis to tackle global health challenges and showcase the power of large-scale data science collaborations among nations.

Professor Tom Rodden, Pro Vice Chancellor for Research and Knowledge Exchange at the University of Nottingham said, his team led by Prof Philip Quinlan is working on a project creating open-source tools to enable partner organisations to quickly share data and insights, improving response times.

As the collaboration progresses, HDR UK and NRF will continue to explore opportunities for joint research projects, training programs, and initiatives that prioritise the responsible use of health data.
