5 great music and other shows to see in Hong Kong this weekend, October 4-6

From the annual Fine Art Asia fair, Grammy-nominated classical musicians to a family-friendly science exhibition with an immersive virtual reality experience, there is something for everyone to see this weekend in Hong Kong.

1. Fine Art Asia

The Hong Kong art fair, launched in 2006 and known for being the city’s first antiques fair, describes itself as “where classic and contemporary converge”. This year’s edition adds one more element: contemporary design.

The new “Collectible Design – Asia Section Pavilion” is curated by Grace Lau and features 100 items by contemporary designers. It can be found alongside 66 booths with Chinese, Asian and Western antiques as well as contemporary art.

“Fine Art Asia”, Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, Oct 4-6, 11am-7pm, Oct 7, 11am-6pm. Standard tickets: HK$220.

2. Broken Branches recital by Karim Sulayman and Sean Shibe

On Friday October 4, American tenor Karim Sulayman and Scottish guitarist Sean Shibe will be in Hong Kong to perform 15 tracks from their album Broken Branches, nominated for best classical solo vocal album in this year’s Grammy awards.

Their music traverses Eastern and Western cultures, reflecting their own cultural backgrounds. Sulayman is Lebanese-American and Shibe, based in Scotland, is of English and Japanese heritage.

This rich and unusual programme includes pieces by Purcell and Monteverdi as well as an arrangement of the traditional Sephardic Jewish song La prima vez and the contemporary A butterfly in New York by the French-Lebanese composer Layale Chaker.

“Broken Branches”, Concert Hall, Hong Kong City Hall, October 4, 7.30pm. Tickets available from Art-Mate and Urbtix.
