Tensions are once again at a high point between China and Taiwan after Beijing launched new military drills around Taiwan on Monday (Oct 14).
The Chinese military, known as the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), described the latest exercise as a “stern warning” after Taiwanese President Lai Ching Te reiterated last week that Taiwan and China are not subordinate to each other.
While many Taiwanese celebrities like Ouyang Nana and Angela Chang reshared Chinese state broadcaster CCTV’s post declaring that “Taiwan has been China’s territory since ancient times”, as well as pictures of drills on their Weibo accounts to show their support, there were some that remained silent, like Jolin Tsai.
So when the 44-year-old singer made an appearance at an event in Taipei earlier this week, the media took the opportunity to ask for her views on the tensions in cross-strait relations.
And her reaction was priceless.
Jolin, who just a few seconds ago, was breezily sharing about her upcoming album, froze and stared at the reporter.
Her team quickly stepped in to block the question and Jolin heaved a sigh of relief, grinning awkwardly at the cameras.
