Near-Zero Turnout For Blood Donation Drive After Local Company Makes Staff Take Half-Day Leave For It

We all know that feeling when a company implements a new policy that makes everyone go: “What?! Why?!”

Yesterday (Dec 26), a netizen in Singapore took to Reddit to lament that his company’s blood donation drive had almost zero turnout due to a policy change in the organisation.

According to the original poster (OP), employees now have to apply for half-day leave if they were to go for a blood donation drive.

In the past, the company would give an additional half-day leave to staff every time they donate blood.

“Lo and behold, only one or two people turned up from the whole company to donate blood,” wrote the OP.

He added that it’s a stark contrast from the past, when “at least 50 or even more” of the staff regularly donate blood.

The OP then went on to lament that the company’s decision to remove employees’ leave for blood donation is sending “the opposite signal” from the government’s efforts to encourage others to donate blood.

Netizens are empathising with the OP, with one calling the company’s decision a “backward policy”.

“There’s already no incentive to donate blood, only out of goodwill. So unless you feel like doing a good deed, sure. But now you need to take your own leave to donate? Obviously no one’s gonna go,” wrote one netizen.

Another netizen, however, suggested that the government could back its call for blood donation by allowing blood banks to issue half-day MC for those who donate blood during office hours.

Sounds like a plausible alternative, right?
