A woman in Indonesia has gone viral for teaching her five-year-old daughter to drive. Yes, drive. An actual car.
A clip sees the little girl sitting on her mum’s lap with her hands on the wheel as the latter gives her instructions on how to maneuver it.
The girl confidently turns the steering wheel left and right according to her mum’s instructions. Since she clearly isn’t tall enough to reach the pedals, the mum is in charge of pumping the brakes and controlling the speed.
Netizens were shocked by what they saw, with many criticising the woman for putting both herself and her child in a “dangerous situation”.
“What if a driver coming the opposite direction speeds up towards them?” wondered one netizen, while another told them to “stop putting others in danger”.
“Why does a five-year-old need to learn to drive?” read another comment.
The little girl looked to be having her “lessons” at a residential estate, likely the neighbourhood where they live.
Although the majority of netizens frowned upon the idea, there were also a handful who didn’t find a problem with what the lady and her child were doing.
“Her mother has full control of the brakes, so she just needs to be alert and step on the brakes if she needs to,” argued one netizen. Another also said that the lessons could help the girl “train her reflexes”.
We’re sure there are much safer ways a child could do that though.
Some netizens have also shared that their parents had taught them the basics of driving at a young age by using electronic kiddy cars.
Perhaps the woman should look into investing in one of those instead.
