T.O.P Says He Left BigBang As He Did Not Want His Drug Scandal To Hurt The Group Even More

Korean star T.O.P, 37, recently gave his first interview in 11 years. There, he spoke about his controversial appearance in Squid Game 2, and addressed questions about his former group Big Bang.

In 2017, T.O.P, whose real name is Choi Seung-hyun, was found guilty of illegal marijuana use and was given a 10-month suspended jail sentence.

He left his YG Entertainment in 2022 and officially left BigBang in 2023.

There was much speculation about his departure from the group, but T.O.P did not address any of them, leaving many questions unanswered.

Until now.

According to T.O.P, his mistakes had “severely hurt the image of BigBang and the agency” and he made the decision to leave as he was filled with guilt and regret and “did not want to hurt the group further”.

At that time, he wanted to reveal the reason for his departure but he “did not have the outlet to do so”.

Fans were hopeful that T.O.P would return to the group, and many would tag him in social media posts which contained group pictures of him with G-Dragon, Taeyang, and Daesung during their 18th anniversary in 2024. However, these fans later discovered T.O.P had blocked them.

It led many to believe he did not want to be associated with BigBang anymore.

About this, T.O.P said: “I saw fans posting photos, tagging me and other members, but I was still dealing with the guilt from my mistakes. I responded to them, but my way of response was wrong.”

“I did not want to give false hope to fans who wished for a reunion or were still waiting. The members were precious to me like family. Seeing BigBang was like looking at a photo of a family I had been separated from. It was pain and suffering that only I could understand,” he added.

“There were some people who genuinely cheered for me, but I said some very hurtful things to them. I regret what I did, and I believe that I need to bear the regret for the rest of my life,” he said.

T.O.P declined to speak about the other members of BigBang out of respect for them. He also admitted he is no longer not in contact with any of them.

When asked if he hopes to be part of BigBang again in the future, T.O.P said: “The reason I cannot return is, honestly, because I feel too ashamed to face the other members.”

The criticism he has gotten, he believes, is just part and parcel of the fame and love he received as part of such a successful group.

As for now, T.O.P will turn his focus to acting to show how he much he has grown through those difficult times. He wishes to lead a regular life and move forward with a positive mindset.
