Normally, when you owe money from a loan shark, the first thing to expect is red paint splattered on your doorstep, accompanied by the iconic “O$P$”.
Owe money, pay money.
However, a recent case near Whampoa took a surprising turn. Instead of red paint, a man used a hammer to make his point—though he wasn’t actually a loan shark.
Man Banged Woman’s HDB Door With a Hammer Near Whampoa
A 70-year-old man named Ho See Kum allegedly showed up at a woman’s flat in Saint George’s Lane near Whampoa to threaten her.
Not just verbally, but with a hammer in hand.
According to the Singapore Police Force, officers received a call for assistance on 26 January 2025 at about 4:05pm at Block 5, Saint George’s Lane.
The caller reported that a man was outside her home, knocking on the gate and hacking at her door.
Through follow-up investigations and with the help of police cameras, officers from the Central Police Division arrested the man within four hours of the report. A hammer was seized as a case exhibit.
Man Claimed the Woman Owed Him Money
There are two sides to every story. While Ho’s actions may seem extreme, he claimed he had a good reason for them.
According to him, the woman owed him money and had been avoiding his calls. In frustration, he allegedly damaged her door with the hammer.
Court documents reveal that Ho visited the woman’s flat at around 4pm on 26 January 2025 intending to cause alarm. However, the nature of their relationship was not disclosed in court.
Man Also Found Guilty of Drug Possession
On 27 January 2025, Ho was charged with one count of criminal intimidation.
The offence of criminal intimidation carries a penalty of up to seven years imprisonment, a fine, or both.
He is due to return to court on 24 February 2025, as the prosecution has requested more time to complete its investigations.
This isn’t Ho’s first encounter with the law. He is also facing a separate charge under the Misuse of Drugs Act. On 12 October 2024, Ho was allegedly found in possession of methamphetamine in a room at the New Cathay Hotel.
Court records show that Ho had previously been convicted of drug possession on 30 July 2019, for which he was sentenced to two years in prison. He was released on remission on 18 November 2023, with the remission period set to end on 27 April 2026.
However, as his latest charges fall within this period, Ho is considered to have breached the basic conditions of his remission order.
Other ‘Banging’ Incidents
This isn’t the first time someone has resorted to banging on another person’s door in frustration.
On 25 October 2024, a man caused a commotion in Joo Chiat after banging on a woman’s door.
The reason? His van was parked too close to her frangipani plant.
The woman had texted the van’s rental company to complain, prompting them to contact the hirer—who then showed up at her door. The encounter quickly escalated into a heated argument, with expletives and furious banging captured on CCTV.
