On a recent Hush Podcast episode, hosts Germaine Tan, Hazelle Teo, and Azura Goh discussed the different ways in which people introduce their significant others to their families.
While talking about the best ways one can tell their parents about their partner, Germaine read a comment from a viewer who shared that “the trick is to keep talking [your significant other] up before your parents even meet them”.
Turns out that’s exactly what Germaine did when she told her parents about her boyfriend.
Germaine told 8days.sg in June 2023 that she had met her boyfriend, Zouk Group CEO Andrew Li, 40, in mid-2022 at a bar, and they had been officially dating for six months at that time.
When Germaine decided to tell her dad about Andrew, it so happened that she had the perfect prop laying around her house.
“This was funny because this was the exact month Andrew had a magazine cover in a magazine called Prestige. I get Prestige delivered to my house so he was sitting on my dining room table, his face staring at my parents every day and they had no idea,” she recounted.
She then told her parents: “He’s a really nice guy, he’s very active, he meditates, he loves dogs and… he’s on this magazine cover. You all can read.”
Germaine then passed the magazine to her parents and quickly left the room.
“The next day [my dad] put the magazine outside my [room] door, so he read it lah,” said Germaine with a grin before thanking the magazine ‘cos “the story talked him up very well”.
“It did most of the job for me,” she added.
Props to Germaine for coming up with such an efficient way to tell her parents about Andrew. Now, if only we all had stellar magazine features of our partners to show our parents as a way of introduction.
