TikTok CEO: “We will not stop fighting and advocating for you”

In a moving video response, TikTok CEO Shou Chew took a stand against the recent decision of the U.S. House of Representatives that threatened to reshape the landscape of social media in America.

The bill, aimed at forcing TikTok’s Chinese parent company, ByteDance, to sell the app or face a ban, has sparked widespread debate over issues of national security, free speech, and the influence of social media platforms.

Amidst this backdrop, Chew sought to address the TikTok community directly, aiming to clear up what he described as “a lot of misinformation” around the contentious vote.

Opening his address, Chew extended heartfelt thanks to the TikTok community, praising their efforts to voice opposition against the bill.

“Hi, everyone. A show here. Just wanted to share some thoughts with our users about the disappointing vote in the House of Representatives… Thank you for making your voices heard over the last few years,” Chew said, highlighting the unique spirit and activism of TikTok’s user base.

Chew then tackled the crux of the matter, emphasizing TikTok’s dedication to user data security and the company’s ongoing efforts to ensure the platform remains free from external manipulation.

“We have invested to keep your data safe and our platform free from outside manipulation. We have committed that we will continue to do so,” he asserted, directly addressing concerns that have fueled legislative actions against the app.

The CEO did not shy away from the potential consequences of the bill, warning that it could lead to TikTok’s ban in the United States, thereby consolidating power among a few other social media companies.

Chew’s comments reflect broader concerns about the bill’s impact on competition and the digital ecosystem.

“This legislation, if signed into law, will lead to a ban of TikTok in the United States. Even the bill’s sponsors admit that that’s their goal,” Chew remarked, underscoring the existential threat faced by TikTok.

Highlighting the bill’s economic and social ramifications, Chew pointed out the dire consequences for creators and small businesses reliant on TikTok, the risk to over 300,000 American jobs, and the loss of a vital expressive platform for TikTok’s 170 million users.

“It will also take billions of dollars out of the pockets of creators and small businesses. It will put more than 300,000 American jobs at risk and it will take away your TikTok,” he stated, emphasizing the widespread impact of a potential ban.

Chew’s message was one of resilience and advocacy, promising to fight for the platform and its community.

He urged TikTok users to continue sharing their stories, engaging with their communities, and reaching out to senators to safeguard their constitutional rights.

“We will not stop fighting and advocating for you. We will continue to do all we can, including exercising our legal rights to protect this amazing platform that we have built with you,” Chew vowed, rallying the community to stand together in the face of adversity.

Ending on a note of solidarity and hope, Chew’s address to the TikTok community underscored the shared journey ahead, as they navigate the challenges posed by legislative scrutiny.

“We believe we can overcome this together. I encourage you to keep showing your stories… Protect your constitutional rights. Make your voices heard. Love you all,” he concluded, reinforcing his commitment to fighting for the platform’s future in the U.S.
