A 26-year-old British influencer fell to his death while attempting to film social media content on a bridge.
The bridge in question? The Castilla La Macha bridge — the tallest cable-stayed bridge in Europe.
26-Year-Old Lewis Stevenson Falls to His Death; Climbed 192m Tall Bridge to Film Content
On Sunday (13 October), a 26-year-old British content creator, Lewis Stevenson, fell to his death from the Castilla La Macha bridge in Spain.
A spokesperson from the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office has since shared that the office was in contact with the Spanish authorities, and was supporting the family of a British man who died in Spain. Presumably, this was referring to Stevenson.
Stevenson was well-known online for being an absolute daredevil — the 26-year-old frequently scaled all sorts of tall structures without any safety gear. He would subsequently post pictures and videos of his climbs on his social media accounts.
From skyscrapers to the beams on tall buildings, Stevenson climbed just about everything.
This time, the rooftopper took on the challenge of scaling the Castilla La Macha bridge, which is not only the tallest cable-stayed bridge in Spain, but also the tallest in Europe.
The bridge stands 192 metres tall and spans the River Tagus. For reference, that’s nearly as high as Marina Bay Sands, which stands at just over 200m tall.
Stevenson had climbed the Castilla La Mancha bridge alongside another 24-year-old man. The pair had gone all the way to Spain to climb the bridge and film content for social media.
This was despite authorities banning the scaling of the bridge after several other climbers and content creators had attempted scaling the bridge.
Initial Investigations Suggest that The Fall Was Caused By Weather Conditions
The question is this — if Stevenson had so much experience climbing these tall structures, what happened that made him fall this time?
According to Shin Min Daily News, initial investigations into Stevenson’s death seem to suggest that weather conditions might have played a role in his death.
However, this was rebutted by the 24-year-old who Stevenson was climbing the bridge with. According to the 24-year-old, Stevenson appeared to have lost consciousness before falling, which suggests that the content creator had fallen because of a health issue instead.
Lewis Stevenson: A “Thrill-Seeker”
Stevenson’s mother has since shared that the family was “absolutely devastated” by the accident.
Stevenson’s mother described the 26-year-old as a “thrill-seeker” with a love for travelling and experiencing new things. She also shared that although the family supported Stevenson’s adventures around the world, they did not particularly agree with his climbing.
Well, understandably so.
“He knew his limits and never did anything beyond them. He was a keen photographer and he did this all for passion, not as an influencer,” the 26-year-old’s mother added.
