Asia Pacific & Japan (APJ) hyperscale data centre player, AirTrunk has opened a 150 megawatt (MW) data centre – JHB1 – in Malaysia.
The initial phases of JHB1 will provide over 50 MW of capacity for technology customers, particularly in the cloud computing sector.
It is located in Johor Bahru at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula.
The data centre offers domestic and international connections to regional technology hubs including neighbouring Singapore, with an end-to-end cross-border connection strategy.
AirTrunk’s head of Malaysia, Pei Jet Lim said the new data centre supports the growth of cloud and AI in Malaysia and aligns with the MADANI Government’s initiative to establish AI hubs in the country.
The long-term demand from JHB1 provides the stability to underpin investment in the energy grid and initiate green energy developments, she added.
According to AirTrunk, the new data centre has a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of 1.15.
It features an AI-ready design and is the first to use AirTrunk’s direct-to-chip liquid cooling technology, along with traditional indirect evaporative cooling (IEC) and high-density racks.
This approach reduces energy consumption by up to 23 percent.
AirTrunk launched this liquid cooling technology in July 2024 after five years of research and development.
To accelerate the energy transition and support energy reliability, AirTrunk works with the Malaysian utility company Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) to connect the JHB1 data centre.
