Amirul Hakim is one lucky guy.
The 29-year-old Malaysian, who has autism, recently won RM1 million (S$299K) at the 109th Bank Simpanan Nasional (BSN) Sijil Simpanan Premium draw.
BSN customers aged 12 and above with a minimum of RM3K (S$899) savings are eligible for the draw.
Amirul’s parents, Abdul Hamid and Yuhani Abd Rahaman told Berita Harian that though their son has been saving since he was 12, they never imagined that this effort would lead to such a rewarding outcome.
“We saved whatever we could each month, including money from his siblings and duit Raya (gift money given out during Hari Raya),” they said.
In fact, they were initially skeptical about the win and needed multiple confirmations by bank officials to assure them it wasn’t a scam.
It wasn’t until they saw Amirul’s name on the bank’s website and social media that they were convinced he had won.
Amirul, the sixth of seven siblings, is non-verbal and requires assistance with daily activities. He also attends a special education school that caters to individuals with disabilities.
His parents view the prize as more than a windfall — it is a “safety net” for Amirul’s future.
“If we ever face difficulties, it will be there for him,” they explained.
“My son does not understand anything, so for now, we will keep the money in his account so that it can continue to grow in the form of dividends,” they added.
