Bitera – an affiliate of the MMS Group Indonesia (MMSGI) – has officially announced the launch of its data centre located in the Kuningan area of Jakarta’s main business district in Indonesia.
The new data centre is a Tier-III+ facility that provides Five9s availability SLA (service level agreement) and offers a critical IT load capacity of 20 MW with up to 4,000 racks.
The launch ceremony was attended by Indonesian government officials including the Minister of Investment/Head of the Investment Coordinating Board, Bahlil Lahadalia and the Minister of State-Owned Enterprises (BUMN) Erick Thohir – highlighting government-private sector synergy.
Bitera’s CEO, Tedy Harjanto, said the company has implemented energy-efficient and environmentally friendly technologies and achieved carbon neutrality. Moving forward, Bitera is committed to maintaining its sustainability measures in the future.
Harjanto added that there is a lot of upside growth potential as the penetration of data centres in Indonesia is currently still below one watts per capita, which was very low when compared to neighbouring countries like Singapore which had 100 watts per capita.
The average consumption in Japan reaches 10 watts per capita, indicating that Indonesia still has a lot of room to grow in terms of data centre infrastructure, he added.
Data from the Association of Indonesian Internet Service Providers (APJII) shows that Indonesia has one of the lowest penetrations in the APAC region, with only 0.3 watts per capita of data centre for the population.
When compared to other ASEAN countries, the data centre capacity in Indonesia is only equivalent to approximately 12.7 percent capacity, APJII added.
The Indonesian government officials emphasise the importance of digital infrastructure for the nation’s digital transformation and economic competitiveness.
“Bitera’s presence as a local pride data centre represents a significant historical milestone on our nation’s digitalisation journey. The presence of Bitera is expected to strengthen the national digital infrastructure to help prepare Indonesia to compete internationally, empowering MSMEs and startups through access to sophisticated technology,” said Lahadalia.
Currently, Indonesia is lagging in data centre development compared to the target set for 2030.
To that end, MMS Group Indonesia’s CEO, Sendy Greti, said in line with Indonesia’s great potential in developing the digital economy, MMS Group Indonesia sees a significant upside for data centres.
“We believe Bitera will meet these needs and play a crucial role in supporting Indonesian digital economy development. Bitera’s presence also aligns with the government’s goal to drive the growth of the nation’s digital economy through collaboration with the private sector,” Greti said.
MMSGI is a sustainable asset management company with nearly two decades of operation in energy and property. It has three main business pillars, namely MMS Resources, MMS Land, and MMS Solution with operations spread across Indonesia.
Ensuring reliability and security for data centres
Bitera, a 100 percent Indonesian-owned company, ensures power reliability through 2N redundancy from two diversified substations. Furthermore, Bitera has obtained certifications including ISO 27001, indicating it has implemented comprehensive information security controls and processes, he said.
Looking ahead, Bitera is working to obtain two certifications from Uptime Institute including TCCD (Tier Certification of Constructed Facility) and TCCF (Tier Certification of Constructed Facility) certifications.
TCCD certifies that a data centre’s design meets the specified Tier requirements. In contrast, TCCF certifies that the constructed facility matches the design and can deliver the expected level of performance and reliability.
According to Harjanto, Bitera leverages its “strategic location in proximity to internet exchange points” in downtown Jakarta, providing easy access for connecting businesses to the digital ecosystem through interconnections with low latency.
Moreover, Bitera has implemented energy-efficient and environmentally friendly technologies and achieved carbon neutrality. Moving forward, Bitera has committed itself to maintaining sustainability measures in the future. As an affiliate of MMS Group Indonesia, Bitera shares the same view of developing sustainable Indonesia.
