BYD, a Chinese electric vehicle (EV) brand, has zoomed past the competition to become Singapore’s top-selling car brand in 2024—yes, even beating Toyota.
It’s no surprise as EVs have become the next trendy thing for cars in Singapore.
However, this is the first time a Chinese EV brand has topped the list.
This surprising turn of events isn’t just about car sales; it’s also a sign that Singaporeans are embracing EVs.
BYD is S’pore’s Top-Selling Car Brand in S’pore in 2024, Beating Even Toyota
With 6,191 units registered, China’s BYD has claimed the title of the best-selling car brand in Singapore for 2024, leaving Japan’s Toyota and Germany’s BMW behind.
According to statistics from the Land Transport Authority published on 17 January 2025, BYD’s sales accounted for 14.4% of all new car registrations in 2024.
The 6,191 cars registered included models from both BYD and its luxury arm, Denza, which made its debut in Singapore this year.
BYD accomplished these milestones in a remarkably short time.
In 2023, BYD ranked fourth, which is already a noteworthy achievement for a Chinese brand in Singapore. It was also the first time the brand made the top 10.
In total, BYD saw an increase of 4,775 units in 2024, up from just 1,416 cars in 2023. This represents a staggering 337% growth.
Toyota Came in Second Place
In second place for 2024 was Toyota, registering 5,736 units through its authorised agent Borneo Motors. This figure also includes vehicles from its luxury sub-brand, Lexus.
Toyota had been the best-selling brand in 2023.
BMW held on to third place, with 5,042 registrations. The brand is represented by two dealers, Performance Motors and Eurokars.
German carmaker Mercedes-Benz slipped from second to fourth place, registering 4,887 cars.
Tesla, the other EV-only brand on the list aside from BYD, climbed four spots from ninth to fifth place, with 2,384 registrations in 2024.
The remaining brands on the list offer a mix of internal combustion engine models and petrol hybrids, though some also boast popular EV models.
43,022 New Car Registrations in Singapore in 2024
In total, there were 43,022 new car registrations in 2024, up from 30,225 in 2023—a 42.3% increase.
This surge is due, in part, to the higher supply of certificates of entitlement (COEs), which are required to register vehicles in Singapore.
Although all top 10 brands registered more cars in 2024, four of them—Kia, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, and Nissan—saw a decline in their market share.
Mr James Ng, managing director of BYD Singapore and the Philippines, credited Singapore’s push to promote the switch to EVs, combined with the strength of the carmaker’s global brand, as key factors in the brand’s success.
BYD Was Second Behind Toyota in H1 Singapore Car Sales
It wasn’t exactly a shock when BYD eventually claimed the top spot, as it had already climbed to second place in H1 2024 Singapore car sales, according to The Business Times.
In December 2024, Reuters reported that BYD was on track to surpass its global annual sales goal, even overtaking Ford and Honda.
BYD’s rise is in sharp contrast to the struggles of traditional car giants like Nissan, Volkswagen, and Stellantis. These Western brands have seen their sales drop in China and are finding it hard to keep up with the global shift to electric vehicles.
