Do chickens really fall from the sky?
Last year, Mediacorp actress Chantalle Ng took to her Instagram to share that she’s a proud mum to two silkie chickens.
Then yesterday (Mar 13), out of nowhere, the 28-year-old star, who lives in a one-storey conservation house, found that her coop of chickens had expanded.
And no, her hens, which she named Happy and Fluffy, did not give birth to baby chicks.
In her Instagram Stories, Chantalle wrote about how she found three random chickens she has never seen before in her house.
“I think someone abandoned them at our place,” she added, also saying that she felt “horrified and happy at the same time”.
Chantalle later revealed that she and her mum, Mediacorp actress Lin Meijiao, 60, decided to call the non-emergency police hotline as they were concerned that someone had trespassed into their house.
The person had also left a packet of chicken feed next to the outdoor enclosure which Chantalle uses to house Happy and Fluffy.
“We were worried. ‘What if the person doesn’t only want to give us chickens? What if they’ve been stalking us?’ You know when you don’t have answers it starts to get scary in your head, so we called the non-emergency police hotline,” says Chantalle when 8days.sg reached out to her.
The police showed up almost immediately. They found out through Chantalle’s next-door neighbour that “another family around the area also keeps chickens” and headed over to investigate.
“The police asked that neighbour if she had chickens in her house, and she said: ‘Yes, I have a few silkie chickens they’re very cute’, but when she tried to look for them they were missing. She came to the conclusion that her mother-in-law brought the chickens over to our house. Maybe she just didn’t like them in her house or something?” wonders Chantalle.
As they were unable to confirm if her neighbour’s mother-in-law had actually trespassed into her house, Chantalle, who verifies that nothing in her house is missing, now suspects that the woman had thrown the chickens over the fence and into the coop.
“I think she just really wanted to get rid of the chickens,” says Chantalle.
According to Chantalle, the neighbour was “in a state of shock”. She didn’t realise her chickens were missing until the police showed up. She then apologised to Chantalle when she went over to retrieve the chickens.
“She said she’s the one caring for them and that the chickens were hers so I think that’s something she would resolve with her mother-in-law,” says Chantalle.
What was the actress intending to do with the chickens if no one came to take them back?
“I actually booked an appointment with the vet just to make sure they’re healthy and free of any nasty pests. I was really trying to persuade my mum to keep the chickens ‘cos when I found out that somebody threw chickens into my house, my first reaction was, ‘There are more chickens to play with our chickens’,” she laughs.
Chantalle says Meijiao was adamant about not having anymore chickens as they already have a lot of pets at home. “So I was looking for alternatives and texting friends to ask if they’re interested. Some of them already have chickens as pets so we were wondering if they wanted more.”
Apart from Happy and Fluffy, Chantalle has two dogs, Dasher and Pretty, who were both adopted from local shelter SOSD Singapore.
