Chen Hanwei Got Into Accident With Cyclist; Cyclist Allegedly Kept on Filming Incident

Chen Hanwei, a familiar face in Singapore’s entertainment industry, found himself in an unexpected pickle on a quiet Thursday afternoon when his white Mercedes crossed paths—quite literally—with a cyclist named Mr Zhuo.

It all went down on Irrawaddy Road, near Balestier, on 8 August, where Mr Zhuo, a 33-year-old teacher, was enjoying a bike ride.

As fate would have it, Chen Hanwei was in front of him, driving his white Mercedes. According to Mr Zhuo, Chen’s car suddenly slowed down and made a left turn into an apartment complex without signalling.

This left Mr Zhuo, who was allegedly cycling on the left-most lane of the road, no time to react, causing him to crash into the car’s left side, lose his balance, and hit the tarmac.

When the driver of the Mercedes exited the car to check up on him, Mr Zhou immediately recognised him as the long-time Mediacorp actor.

Ouch. Talking about bumping into celebrities.

Mr Zhuo walked away with some abrasions on his arms and legs, but luckily, nothing too serious.

His bike, which appeared to be a Helloride shared bicycle, also survived with minimal damage.

Mr Zhuo’s Side of the Story

Mr Zhuo’s account of what followed is where things get a bit more dramatic.

He claims that Chen did not apologise after hitting him but instead only kept asking if he was okay. According to Mr Zhuo, Chen’s concern felt a bit more like he was trying to avoid responsibility rather than genuinely caring for his well-being.

While Mr Zhuo wanted to settle things privately with the veteran actor, he alleges that Chen wasn’t keen on exchanging contact details.

He claimed that Chen even mentioned there wasn’t a pedestrian crossing, which comes across to Mr Zhou that Chen was implying that he did not need to give way in the first place.

Chen Hanwei’s Perspective

Chen Hanwei, on the other hand, remembers the incident a bit differently.

The 54-year-old artiste confirmed to the media that he indeed had not signal before making the turn but mentioned he had slowed down.

After the collision, he got out of his car to check on and offer his assistance to Mr Zhuo as he noticed that Mr Zhuo wasn’t wearing a helmet, which, let’s be honest, is a crucial detail for safety.

However, as Chen realised that Mr Zhou kept filming the incident with his phone, he decided that it was better for both of them if they got the police involved.

As Chen was calling the police, Mr Zhuo strangely decided to leave the scene, even leaving his shared bike behind. Later, Mr Zhuo explained that he had an urgent matter to attend to, but he did file a police report afterward.

When inquired, the police confirmed that they had received a report from a 33-year-old male at 4:20PM on 8 August about an incident regarding a collision between a car and a bicycle.

Mr Zhou also reportedly did not seek medical attention for his sustained wounds.

Meanwhile, Chen clarified to the press that he was ready to take responsibility if it was his fault, and if it wasn’t, he suggested that he did not want to fine Mr Zhuo for his car repairs, citing that it was “a minor issue”.

As the police continue their investigations, this incident serves as a reminder for both drivers and cyclists to exercise caution and consideration.

After all, you never know when you might cross paths with a celebrity—or end up in the news.
