Imagine that just as you’re about to order a McChicken, a real chicken appears beside you, running around—almost as if it’s metaphorically fleeing from your order.
Well, that literally happened at a McDonald’s outlet in Singapore.
Chicken Runs into CCK McDonald’s, Creating an Awkward Scene
On 22 October, Instagram account @sgfollowsall posted footage of a chicken running loose in what they claimed to be the McDonald’s outlet in Choa Chu Kang SAFRA.
In the video, staff members can be seen trying to catch the chicken, but it runs quickly, evading them.
After some effort, they finally managed to capture it and escorted it out of the outlet.
While it’s unclear when exactly this happened, there’s a standee of a pineapple soft serve visible in the video. Since the pineapple soft serve was just released last month, it’s likely that this event happened recently.
Why Are There So Many Chickens in Singapore?
So, why are there so many chickens roaming around Singapore?
Is it just your imagination, or is this really a growing issue?
It’s not just you.
Singapore has seen a surge in free-ranging chicken populations, with complaints rising from 1,000 in 2020 to 1,500 in 2021. Flocks of up to 30 chickens now roam various neighborhoods, from traditional spots like Bishan and Pasir Ris to more unexpected urban areas like Guoco Tower.
The population boom stems from three main factors: COVID-19 pet abandonments, public feeding (despite potential S$10,000 fines), and a 2022 thunderstorm that damaged chicken farms in Murai Farmway, releasing many into the wild. With few natural predators, these chickens have multiplied rapidly.
In Sin Ming, a task force attempted population control in 2022, aiming to reduce local chicken numbers from 90 to 50 through measures like farm relocations and tree pruning.
