June 30 will mark the 31st death anniversary of Wong Ka Kui, the frontman of legendary Hong Kong rock band Beyond.
The musician died at 31 after falling off a stage while filming a variety show in Tokyo.
The band’s hit songs, including ‘Glorious Years’ (光輝歲月) and ‘Boundless Oceans, Vast Skies’ (海阔天空) have withstood the test of time, and remain popular to this day. Wong Ka Kui, too, is fondly remembered as one of the greatest rock icons of his time.
Lately, a Chinese singer, known as Wang Weikai has gone viral for his performance of ‘Glorious Years’. Not only did he look like the late singer, he was also able to do a really good impression of Ka Kui’s voice.
The clip, shared by TikTok user @hendrahuangz, drew plenty of comments from Beyond fans, with many praising the singer for doing the song justice.
“What are the chances that he looks and sounds like Ka Kui?” read a popular comment, while others said the performance was “one of the best tributes they’ve seen in recent times”.
One netizen even wrote: “Why doesn’t Beyond recruit him [into the] band and do a reunion concert??”
However, there were also a few die-hard Beyond fans who felt that while Weikai did a good job, he would “never be able to sing it as well as Ka Kui”.
They believed he shouldn’t become a complete copy of Ka Kui, and instead urged him to “just be himself”.
