If you have a successful actor like Christopher Lee for a brother, it’s understandable that you would be tempted to take the same path as him.
In a recent interview with Taiwanese actress Esther Liu, 48-year-old Malaysian actor Frederick Lee, aka Chris’ little bro, shared that he was inspired to become an actor after seeing Chris, 53, on TV.
When he turned 20, he decided to go into acting, however, his aspirations were shot down by Chris, who was already a popular actor in Singapore at that time.
The reason? Chris had seen too many people get their acting dreams dashed and did not want his brother to experience that.
Admitting that he’s usually very “obedient”, Frederick recalled how he mustered all his courage and told Chris in tears: “Let me decide for my own life just this once, okay!”
Frederick’s decision to take the leap of faith is why he never once complained about his career choice, even when he was penniless.
He eventually managed to make a name for himself in both Taiwan and Malaysia, and was even nominated for Best Leading Actor at Taiwan’s Golden Bell Awards last year, alongside Chris.
Though the award eventually went to Chris, Frederick said he was very contented to be able to compete against his brother.
Now we wonder if Frederick would have brought up how Chris had told him not to be an actor if he won.
