David Gan Touched By Visit From “Great Friend” Carina Lau, Who’s Here For Taylor Swift’s Concert; Will Have Meal With The Star Tomorrow

You know Taylor Swift’s The Eras Concert in Singapore is really a big deal when even Hong Kong screen goddess Carina Lau has flown all the way here just to catch a glimpse of the international pop superstar.

And while she’s here in town, Carina took the opportunity to visit her celebrity hairstylist pal David Gan.

Yesterday (Mar 6), the 61-year-old celeb crimper took to Instagram to share that Carina, who’s here to watch Day 4 of Taylor’s shows at the National Stadium, had dropped by his Passion Hair Salon.

“Some people live nearby but you don’t ever want to meet them. Some people live so far away but you want to see them all the time. Indeed, people will meet again if they’re fated to. I’ve always wanted to go see you, but I didn’t think that today, you’re here in Singapore and you came to see me. My long-time friend, I’m your big, big fan,” lauded David.

When 8days.sg got on a call with David, he shares that Carina was actually the “first super star [he] worked with in Singapore”.

“I styled her hair for a magazine. It was so long ago, and we exchanged phone numbers because social media wasn’t a thing back then. We didn’t really keep in touch but I’ll always remember her as the first superstar I worked with and she was so friendly,” he recalls.

“I like her a lot. She’s very chill and is a great friend to have,” gushes David.

He went on to share that Carina had visited Singapore multiple times after that but he happened to be working overseas all those times.

“At that time I was working abroad with [Chinese actress] Zhang Ziyi so I didn’t get to meet [Carina] in Singapore. But we would sometimes bump into each other backstage at events in Hong Kong or China, and I’ll walk over to speak to her. She would hug me and ask me what I was doing there. Subsequently she did hire me for some jobs. She flew me over to Korea to style one of her commercials,” he recalls.

“There was another time I bumped into her at the Cannes Film Festival. She was with [Japanese actor] Takuya Kimura. She came up to me and when I saw her I felt like crying. She said: ‘Don’t cry, if you cry [I will too] then my make-up will melt’. I’ll always remember that moment, she’s so, so kind.”

That said, David says it’s been very long since they met in person, especially due to the pandemic.

“One morning I was walking and I saw her message. She told me she was coming to Singapore and asked if I was in town. I thought I was dreaming ‘cos it was early in the morning,” he chuckles.

“She said: ‘No, why would you be dreaming? I just wanted to ask if you’ll be in Singapore because I’ve been here three times and you were always not round. I’m going to Singapore to catch Taylor Swift, I want to meet you”. She told me she would stay one more day after the concert to catch a meal with me then she’d fly off the next day,” David tells us.

At this moment, of course we had to ask, is Carina’s husband, movie legend Tony Leung, with her on this trip?

“I don’t know leh because I didn’t ask!” he exclaims.

David continues: “I know Tony Leung too but we’re not that close. I actually met Tony Leung before I knew Carina but we don’t keep in touch. I’ll only see Tony when I work with Carina for award ceremonies, and when I bumped into them in Cannes, Carina did ask Tony to take photos with us.”

Well, so those who are at the show tonight, remember to look out for Carina, and maybe, just maybe, Tony might be there too?
