Have you ever found yourself wishing, perhaps running high on that patriotic adrenaline, that the National Day holiday wouldn’t come to an end? Well this year, Singaporeans can keep the festivities going!
(Unfortunately, it doesn’t come with an additional Public Holiday, but it’ll probably still fun!)
Since National Day falls on a Friday this year, the organisers decided to extend the celebrations into the weekend, giving families more time to enjoy the festivities together.
Colonel Edwin Chua, co-chairman of the heartland celebrations committee, also noted that by holding the festivities on a Saturday, it also gives participants and volunteers one more day to rest before the new work week starts.
On 10 August, the celebrations will spread to five heartland locations: Bishan, Punggol, Yishun, Paya Lebar, and Buona Vista.
Organised by the People’s Association (PA) in partnership with the National Day Parade (NDP) executive committee, these events aim to bring the party closer to home, allowing more Singaporeans to join in the fun.
What to Expect
Starting from 4pm to 9pm, each location will be buzzing with activities, live performances, and, the pièce de résistance, spectacular fireworks. Whether you live in the heart of Bishan or chilling in Punggol, there’s something for everyone.
According to the official NDP news release, the events will feature static displays of vehicles from the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF), Singapore Police Force (SPF), and Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF).
There will be eight to nine vehicles showcasing military and civil defence power, including the SAF’s Terrex infantry carrier and SCDF’s light fire attack vehicle.
For those who love to get their hands dirty and get the full experience, there will be a SAF camouflage booth at all five locations where you can try on camo cream – perfect for a unique National Day selfie.
Other family-friendly activities include a family-portrait photo contest and the creation of a massive birthday card for Singapore. There’s even a green twist: used food cans will be collected and upcycled into touch lamps.
Plus, there will be various schools, ActiveSG’s Dance of the Nation, and community groups putting up live shows.
Unique Themes and Locations
Each heartland celebration has its own unique theme and activities. Here’s a quick rundown for you to see which ones tickle your fancy:
