On 16 October, a shop owner posted uncensored footage from a closed-circuit television (CCTV) of a young woman confidently stealing a Labubu doll on his store’s Facebook page.
The reasoning? He hoped that the thief would see the video and return the doll promptly.
The theft took place at 1.30 pm on 16 October in a shop called “Clawpitiam” at Plaza Singapura, known for its claw machines and anime figurines.
In the video, you can clearly see a young woman, dressed casually in jeans and a black and white raglan t-shirt, enter the store and head straight for the Labubu doll display. She picks up a box from the shelf, checks the counter and leaves the store.
The owner told the media that he’s usually the only one manning the store and wasn’t at the check-out counter when the incident occurred.
In the post caption, the owner said he was giving the thief “24 hours to come back to my shop to surrender before I head over to the police station.”
In an interview with LianHe Zaobao, the 43-year-old said that he posted the video online because he thinks “she is still young and should be given a chance to mend her ways” and hopes that “she can return the merchandise as soon as possible and we won’t delve into it further.”
While the theft took place on 16 October, and the allotted 24 hours have passed, the shop owner is currently still considering calling the police.
A First-Generation Labubu Macaron Was Taken
The thief walked away with a single box of the Labubu Macaron V1, valuable only because it is soon to be discontinued.
According to the owner, the second-generation version will be launched soon, and with the first-generation version now in short supply, the market price for the V1 doll has jumped from $20 to about $50.
Commenters on the CCTV video, however, are not as generous as the owner. Most netizens are urging the owner to just go ahead with the police report. One commenter said “Just make police report. If let off, she knows she can get away with it and will try again.”
Another pointed out that her parents could take responsibility and said “No give chance!! She dare to steal it then must have the guts to get caught and fine the parent.”
Let’s hope the owner’s right and that he gets back both both the doll and an apology from the wayward thief.
