Some say that the worst drivers in the world are the ones around you on the road at any given moment.
A video posted by Facebook group SG Road Vigilante (SGRV) appeared to show one such driver.
They changed lanes, only to brake for seemingly no reason and cause an accident.
But were they really all to blame?
Honda Vezel in Accident After Braking Following Lane Change
The SGRV post reported the accident as taking place at 7:50 am on 19 July. The location was West Coast Road in the Clementi area.
The two-lane road was fairly packed with cars in the early morning peak hours.
On the right lane, traffic came to a stop as cars waited for the green light to turn right onto West Coast Drive.
A white Honda Vezel, intending to go straight, flashed a signal and filtered to the left lane.
Weirdly enough, I feel like most dashcam accident videos end up starting with some lane change of sorts. Maybe they’re cursed. At least the Vezel driver used turn signals.
Unfortunately, the driver’s hot streak of good driving decisions appeared to come to an end by braking immediately after changing lanes despite the green light.
A lorry right behind them had no time to stop and rear-ended the Vezel, denting in the back door and quite impressively popping out the rear windshield in one piece.
Although the impact looked rough, the lorry was at least travelling at a lower speed.
Netizens obviously flung blame for the accident at the driver of the Vezel for braking “for no reason” despite the green light.
Someone even found the decision so baffling they considered it a possible insurance scam.
Vezel was Giving Way to Car Signalling Lane Change
However, other commenters noticed something else.
“Look closely and you’ll realise [the Vezel] stopped to give way to car in front who appears to be signalling left to switch lanes. That’s not a jam brake by any means,” one wrote.
Sure enough, you can see a white car signalling a lane change ahead.
The Honda Vezel braked to let it change lanes safely, but the other white car also waited to let the Vezel pass first.
A fraction of a second later, the lorry’s collision resolved the impasse when it sent the Vezel moving straight ahead.
The discussion then changed to whether the fault would lie with the lorry or still with the Vezel.
“As per my experience with insurance companies, [the lorry] will be held responsible,” a netizen claimed.
Someone else argued that the car in front did not start switching lanes, merely signalling, and as such the white Honda Vezel should have gone ahead.
As the driver braked instead, the commenter pinned the blame on them.
It’s definitely a more complicated situation now that we know the Vezel driver wasn’t trying to get into a “0 IQ Driver Compilation” video.
