We’ve probably all seen videos of K-pop idols being mobbed at airports by super enthusiastic fans.
Seoul’s Incheon International Airport has a new method to curb the issue.
Earlier today, the airport announced that it will allow celebrities to use the gates that were previously only open to flight crew. They have since notified all entertainment agencies, and will officially implement the new plan on October 28.
The goal is to reduce the overcrowding of fans at terminals, eliminating the possibility of dangerous scenarios, and to avoid inconveniencing other travellers.
Incheon International Airport urged all agencies to advise fans of their artistes to avoid sending them off and picking them up at the airport. They also added that companies can now send in an application to the airport to arrange for their artistes to travel via private gates.
The new procedure was partly implemented due to an incident involving Korean star Byeon Woo Seok’s agency and fans earlier this year. The actor had been travelling around Asia for his fan meet tour in June and July.
Woo Seok was regularly hounded by overzealous fans at the airport. His security team reportedly shone a flashlight at any traveller who looked in his direction, blocked gates, and conducted checks on other passengers without the airport’s authorisation.
Their actions resulted in widespread discussion about celebs and “excessive security measures”.
It was also announced that airport police will step in to assist with order control should 300 to 500 fans show up to see their idols. Should the crowd exceed 500, airport police will further tighten these measures, and pursue legal action against uncooperative individuals.
The implementation of the new plan may upset those who wish to catch a glimpse of their idols at the airport, but it’s probably for the best.
