India’s PhantomFX consolidates data with Pure Storage – Data and Analytics

India’s visual effects (VFX) studio PhantomFX has consolidated disparate storage systems across departments to improve production times, business resilience, and energy consumption.

Previously, each department operated its own separate storage system with the creative team struggling to move data across systems.

The firm has upgraded data storage and management infrastructure to the Pure Storage FlashBlade//S file and object platform.

This has helped VFX artists save up to 30 percent of time, leading to faster completion of projects.

PhantomFX has worked with Techfruits Solutions for this project.

Techfruits Solutions is Pure Storage’s channel partner.

PhantomFX’s IT manager, Boopathy Thangamuthu, said, the timelines for movies are tight, and people need to be fast and accurate.

“If artists lose time in copying data to and from the storage system, it leads to a waste of production time and money,” said Thangamuthu.

FlashBlade’s real-time storage helps meet deadlines without hassles and has saved around 30 percent of man-hours and machine-hours every day, he added.

Enhances data protection

Amid a rising threat of ransomware attacks in the film industry, PhantomFX needed enhanced data protection.

The firm is using Pure Storage’s SafeMode feature and quick data restoration capabilities, to fight cyberattacks.

According to the company, by consolidating data to the Pure Storage platform, it has reduced energy consumption in its data centre by turning off legacy storage systems and reducing rack space by 58 percent.

The company estimates it will reduce energy consumption by around 35,000 kWh over a year and reduce its carbon footprint.

The integration of DirectFlash technology and data compression allows for efficient data consolidation with room for future growth.

Pure Storage’s ability to non-disruptively upgrade its storage systems will help PhantomFX increase storage capacity in the future without having to take down its storage infrastructure.
