A newlywed couple in Indonesia has gone viral for their massive age gap.
On June 30, Instagram account Abouthetic shared a video of a wedding ceremony between an elderly man and his young bride. The couple were seen dressed in traditional Javanese attire as they greeted their guests.
The video’s caption, written in Bahasa Indonesia, revealed that there was a 60-year age gap between the pair.
Yes, 60.
Needless to say, netizens were left shocked, with many wondering if the girl had “married for money”.
According to Indonesian media TribunNews, the lavish ceremony took place in a village in Riau, one of the most prosperous provinces in Indonesia. The groom is 75-years-old, and his bride, 15.
It was also said that one of the groom’s grandkids is the same age as his bride.
There was no information on how the couple had gotten to know each other in the first place.
It was later reported that the local village head had confirmed the union was approved by both the bride and groom’s families.
As the bride is still a minor, the couple also sought consent from local authorities, and attended a court hearing before receiving permission to proceed with the marriage.
In Indonesia, the legal age to get married with parental consent is 19. Marriages involving an individual who is not of age will first have to obtain a dispensation from the court.
