The next time you walk past a restaurant in China and you see the staff squirming and flinging their heads towards you, don’t freak out.
In a recent video circulating on Douyin, staff of a restaurant in Zhoushan, Zhejiang, were seen standing at the entrance of the establishment, bobbing their heads vigorously.
They also repeatedly swung their heads towards the restaurant, seemingly trying to attract potential customers into the eatery.

If you’re thinking why not just wave their hands like regular folks?
Well, as it turns out, they are banned from doing so.
“Some scenic spots do not allow shops to solicit tourists, so by [using their heads] they’re not technically attracting customers,” explained the boss of a local restaturant in the comments.
Another netizen also suggested that using hand gestures may give customers a bad impression as it is usually followed by “blocking” or “pulling [them into the shops]”.
Netizens, however, have mixed views about this unconventional approach to “attract” customers.
While one netizen who has dined at a restaurant that adopts such tactics said the experience was akin to being treated like a celebrity, another was skeptical about such eateries.
“If they have to resort to such tactics, the food probably doesn’t taste good, so you should avoid them,” warned the netizen.
