We haven’t heard much from Low Thia Kiang, but he recently found himself back in the spotlight because of the WP saga.
Now, everyone’s wondering: will he make a comeback in the next election?
Well, the answer is finally out.
Low Thia Khiang Reveals If He’ll Run in the Next GE or Not
Former Workers’ Party (WP) chief Low Thia Khiang has confirmed that he will not be participating in the next General Election.
In a video shared on the WP’s Instagram account on 7 December, the 68-year-old clarified his retirement while distributing the party’s Hammer newsletter during an outreach activity.
Responding to a resident who queried whether he would be contesting again, Low stated unequivocally, “I’m already retired. I’m not participating in the election.”
Low expressed confidence in the WP’s younger leaders, saying, “We got a younger generation that can move the party forward. They can do much better than me.”
Singapore’s next General Election must be held by November 2025.
The WP Legend That Everyone Knows Of
Low Thia Khiang’s political journey spans decades, beginning when he joined the Workers’ Party in 1982.
Rising through the ranks, he became the party’s assistant secretary-general before securing a historic victory in Hougang Single-Member Constituency (SMC) during the 1991 General Election.
As Hougang’s Member of Parliament (MP), Low was re-elected in 1997, 2001, and 2006.
He took over as WP’s secretary-general in 2001 and led the party in multiple elections. In 2011, Low spearheaded a groundbreaking campaign that saw the WP win Aljunied Group Representation Constituency (GRC), marking the first time an opposition party won a GRC in Singapore’s history.
As of now, Aljunied GRC is still under the WP.
Low stepped down as secretary-general in 2018, passing the reins to Mr Singh.
In April 2020, Low sustained a traumatic brain injury following a fall at his Upper Thomson home.
Hospitalized for nearly a month, he later announced in June 2020 that he would not contest that year’s General Election.
However, Low remains an active member of WP’s central executive committee, contributing to the party’s strategic direction.
