MALAYSIA: Hafizul Harawi, the suspect in the shocking Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA 1) gunshot incident, was reportedly apprehended by Malaysian authorities in Kota Bharu, Kelantan on Monday (15 April).
According to Malaysian media Astro Awani, Inspector General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain confirmed the suspect was apprehended in Kota Bharu around 3 pm on Monday.
“Yes, I confirm the arrest. The suspect was apprehended around 3 pm in Kota Bharu.”
Around 1:20 am on Sunday, the 38-year-old suspect fired two shots with his 9mm semiautomatic pistol at his wife at the entrance of the KLIA arrival hall but missed, with one of the shots hitting her bodyguard.
The bodyguard was reportedly assigned to protect Farah Md Isa, also known as Farah Cie, a Ustazah (female religious teacher).
Farah was awaiting the arrival of an Umrah group at the scene.
The victim sustained severe injuries, following which the assailant fled. The suspect fled in a car parked at level two of Block C at the airport.
The police’s earlier investigation confirmed that the suspect owned a travel agency with his wife, Farah Cie who was his target.
Commissioner Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain of Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department revealed that Farah Cie had filed two police reports under Section 506, one in 2016 and another last year, leading her to hire personal bodyguards.
Shuhaily expressed regret that the incident occurred at the nation’s entry point and disclosed that the suspect and his wife were undergoing divorce proceedings.
Earlier, Selangor Police Chief Comm Datuk Hussein Omar Khan revealed that the injured bodyguard remains in stable condition and is still receiving a series of treatments.
