A man, angered when his girlfriend questioned if he was cheating, grabbed a rattan cane and beat her repeatedly, causing severe injuries across her body.
She reported the incident to police the next day and was immediately taken to the hospital for treatment.
The accused, Shairul (name transliterated from Mandarin), 36, pleaded guilty to one count of intentional assault yesterday in court and was sentenced to 10 days in jail for the violent attack on his partner.
Relationship That Quickly Turned Violent
According to court details, the accused worked as a security manager and was in a romantic relationship with the 25-year-old victim at the time of the incident.
Their relationship had deteriorated in recent months, leading up to the assault.
The couple first met on a dating app in August 2022 and quickly began a relationship.
Their romance progressed rapidly, and just two months after meeting, the victim moved into the accused’s home.
The pair began living together, marking a significant step in their short relationship.
The harmonious living arrangement did not last long. Problems emerged when the victim began to suspect her boyfriend was being unfaithful to her.
These suspicions continued to grow until they reached a breaking point on 18 Oct at 9:00 AM, when she entered his bedroom to directly confront him about her concerns.
She specifically asked if he had found someone new.
At the time of the confrontation, the accused had just completed his night shift at work and was resting in bed when the questioning began.
Brutal Attack Following an Argument
What started as a verbal dispute quickly escalated into violence.
The argument intensified when the victim demanded the accused delete her photos from his phone, a request he flatly refused.
As she persisted with her questioning and demands, the accused grew increasingly annoyed and agitated by her insistence.
In a sudden burst of rage, he reached for a black box in the room that contained several rattan canes.
Without warning, he began violently whipping her, targeting her face and arms in a frenzied attack.
Court documents revealed that the victim was struck multiple times across different parts of her body.
Throughout the assault, the victim cried and continued demanding he delete her photographs.
Despite her distress, she managed to record parts of the incident on her mobile phone, which later served as evidence in the case against him.
The accused showed no mercy during the attack.
Ignoring her tears and pleas, he took out additional canes from the box and continued beating her repeatedly, inflicting more pain and injuries with each strike.
The Aftermath
After the beating ended, he showed her his phone screen to prove he had deleted her photos as she had requested, though only after subjecting her to physical abuse.
At approximately 1:00 PM that same day, the victim hastily packed her belongings and fled to Malaysia.
After a day of reflection, she decided to expose his actions. The following day, she returned to Singapore specifically to file a police report against him.
When officers saw the extent of her injuries, which were still visible and serious, they immediately called an ambulance.
The victim was promptly taken to the hospital for medical treatment and assessment of her injuries, which were documented as part of the case against the accused.
The court took into consideration the severity of the assault and the relationship context when handing down the 10-day jail sentence to the accused.
