On 20 October 2024, a three-year-old boy was dramatically rescued from the ledge of a third-storey Housing and Development Board (HDB) flat in Canberra.
The incident, which took place at Block 350C on Canberra Road, was captured on video and later went viral online.
The child, dressed in pyjamas, was spotted standing dangerously close to the edge of the ledge outside a window.
Despite efforts by nearby residents to alert those inside the flat, no one initially responded. The sight of the toddler on the ledge created alarm, prompting a group of bystanders to spring into action.
Public Hero Takes Action
Amid growing concern, an individual, hailed as a “hero” by witnesses, took the initiative to climb the ledge to reach the boy.
Using the wall for balance, the man carefully inched his way towards the toddler.
Simultaneously, another person positioned themselves on a ledge below the second floor, while four other onlookers held a blanket from the ground floor, preparing to catch the child if necessary.
In the video, the rescuer is seen safely reaching the child. Upon discovering that a window was open, he passed the boy to someone inside the flat.
This moment surprised the onlookers, as it became clear that an adult was present inside the unit. Apparently, according to the caption of the post, people have tried to alert the household, but no one answered the door.
Investigations into the Incident
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) confirmed they were alerted to the scene at approximately 11:50am. After the child was safely brought inside, he was taken to KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital for observation.
Thankfully, there were no injuries reported.
Police later revealed that a 25-year-old woman, who was in the flat during the incident, is assisting with investigations.
Authorities are looking into how the child ended up on the ledge, raising concerns once again about the safety and supervision of young children in high-rise flats.
SCDF also commended the public members involved in the rescue for their swift and courageous actions.
