M’sians Cry Foul Over Poster Depicting Durian As S’pore’s National Fruit

Singaporeans love durians.

But when a picture posted to Facebook last Saturday (Aug 17) proclaimed the ‘King of Fruits’ as Singapore’s national fruit, Malaysians were less than impressed.

The pic was titled ‘National Fruits of Countries in Southeast Asia’ and it also listed the durian as the national fruit of Malaysia and Indonesia.

It also showed other Southeast Asian countries with their supposed national fruits.

A host of comments questioned where Singapore grew the ‘king of fruits’ with one asking, “On top of your apartments?” while another hilariously commented that “Singapore grows durians under the sea.”

Another snidely wrote that “the best durians from Singapore come from Segamat, Pagoh, and Raub… Not far from Woodlands MRT Station”.

Segamat, Pagoh, and Raub are popular durian-growing districts in Malaysia.

Interestingly, Indonesia seems to have been left out of the conversation.

Well, you can’t deny most of the durians consumed here are brought in from across the Causeway, right?

But of course, Singaporeans couldn’t wait to hit back, with some saying there are durian trees here.

Another said Malaysia was simply being petty over a poster.

A netizen also cheekily fired back, “We have one big durian in Singapore – The Esplanade.”

Another also wrote, “Singapore can say durian is its national fruit because Malaysia sends the best over.”

The netizen also reminded everyone about the exchange rate between the two countries.

Touche.
