Popcorn and hotdogs are this writer’s go-to snack at the cinema.
But moviegoers in Malaysia now have another food option when catching blockbusters.
Chinese cinema operator Dadi Cinema recently hosted its first hotpot movie session for influencers at the premiere of Hong Kong film The Unwavering Brotherhood.
The event, which took place at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur in Bukit Bintang, Dadi Cinema, also had Hong Kong actor Bosco Wong in attendance and he was spotted chatting with guests in the middle of their meals.
Pictures from social media show quite a respectable amount of ingredients on their tables as they relaxed on fancy leather recliner seats.
According to Dadi Cinema, patrons will have their pick of mala, tomato, and chicken collagen as a soup base that is brought in from popular hotpot chain, Shu Da Xie.
Touted as the first of its kind in Malaysia, the concept first took off in China early last year.
We can only imagine the effort taken to clean up the theatre after each movie session.
Unless… they think moviegoers won’t mind the stale smell of mala sticking to the walls and leather seats?
Netizens have turned their noses up at the concept, with some asking very legit questions in the comments.
“How will I know my meat is cooked when it’s so dark?” read a comment, while another pointed out he “wouldn’t be able to see [his] sauces during the movie.”
One even wrote that there will be “many cockroaches and tikus (rodents) around” once the cinema closes for the night.
A netizen even made us chortle with this comment: “There is one cinema like this. It is called my “home.”
However, fans of the concept also hit back asking detractors to not knock on it until they have tried it.
Saying these cinema halls are made for such experiences, moviegoers can “just get normal tickets if you can’t stand others enjoying hotpot.”
Should the concept come to Singapore, will you be jio-ing your friends for hotpot at the movies?
