Quick & Tasty Meatballs in Brown Sauce & Mashed Potatoes – with Johnsonville

You might know about Johnsonville sausages since they are Singapore’s number 1 selling sausages, but did you know that they also make meatballs? Johnsonville meatballs are made with premium cuts of pork and a perfect blend of spices, making them a delicious and convenient option for a romantic home-cooked meal.

Meatballs from Singapore’s Number 1 Sausage brand

Just like their sausages, Johnsonville meatballs are a high-quality product made without nitrates, MSG, or artificial flavouring. They offer a variety of flavours, including Classic Italian Style Meatballs, 3 Cheese Italian Style Meatballs, and Homestyle Meatballs.

The Classic Italian Style Meatballs feature a blend of traditional Italian herbs and spices, delivering rich, savoury flavors that are perfect for classic dishes like spaghetti and meatballs. The 3 Cheese Italian Style Meatballs combine mozzarella, cheddar, and Romano cheeses, creating a creamy, flavourful bite.

In this recipe, we’ll be using the Homestyle Meatballs, crafted with Johnsonville’s own special blend of spices.

Homestyle Meatballs $18.90, Classic Italian Style Meatballs $18.90, 3 Cheese Italian Style $18.90

Each 680g pack includes 28 pre-cooked meatballs. Simply heat them straight from the freezer in a pan or microwave for a delicious meal in no time! We also like that the meatballs come in resealable packs, making it easy to store.

Cooking A Special Meal with Ease

While these pre-cooked meatballs are perfect for everyday meals, I’ll show you how to elevate them for a special occasion—whether it’s an anniversary, birthday, or even Valentine’s Day. After all, nothing impresses a significant other like a home-cooked meal made with love.

This recipe is designed for those with limited cooking experience. I’ve simplified the steps and ingredients so you can easily prepare this dish, even if you’re cooking from a rented chalet.

Watch a short video of how the Meatballs and Mash are put together.

Cooking Notes

Making the Sauce

This brown sauce is incredibly easy to prepare, using just milk, a bit of chicken stock, and dark soy sauce. If chicken stock isn’t available, you can substitute it with beef stock or even regular soy sauce—the goal is to add a touch of umami flavor. The dark soy sauce (I used cooking caramel) not only enhances the taste but also gives the sauce its rich, appetizing color. To finish, I like to add a crack of black pepper, mainly because my wife enjoys a peppery kick.

My Goto Mashed Potato Recipe

For soft, fluffy mashed potatoes, start with Russet potatoes which are ideal as they are starchy spuds. The real key to an amazing mash, however, lies in the butter!

Once the potatoes are cooked and thoroughly drained, add a generous amount of high-quality butter and mash it in for a rich, velvety finish. (Michelin starred restaurants are known to use up to half of the amount of potatoes!) Season sparingly with just a touch of salt to enhance the flavour without overpowering it.

Putting it all together

Now it’s time to get creative! Since it is for a special occasion, I shaped a heart-shaped “well” with the mashed potatoes. This is to cradle the meatballs and brown sauce. For colour (and for a more balanced meal), I lined the edges with fresh salad greens. To make it extra pretty, I topped the salad with edible flowers!

Instead of the traditional lingonberry jam, I chose to cut beetroot into heart-shaped slices. These not only add a stunning visual element but also provide a tangy contrast that complements the richness of the dish.

Conclusion

Next time you are grocery shopping, why not grab some Johnsonville meatballs? They’re delicious, convenient, and perfect for satisfying hungry appetites in no time. You can also elevate them into a romantic meal for two or for that special occasion.

Happy Eating and Happy Cooking!
