When you think of famous hawker centres in Singapore, Serangoon Garden Market may not be the first to come to mind.
However, last week at the Singapore Hawkers’ Seminar and Awards, it was crowned Singapore’s favourite hawker centre.
It garnered 216 votes out of over 500 from the public.
The food centre is home to famous stalls including Aliff Nasi Lemak, Seng Kee Mushroom Minced Meat Noodle, and Ah Seng Braised Duck.
According to a report from CNA, the place is so popular, people travel “from across the island to eat”. Diners who were interviewed also said they liked the food centre for its diverse food options, and “open-air” structure.
The food centre’s toilet was also described as “first class”.
However, it seems many netizens are not buying the hype behind Serangoon Garden Market.
Some demanded to find out how the public voting was conducted, while others said they’ve “never been there”.
A few also called the place “inaccessible”.
While some Serangoon residents felt pride, there were also a number of regular patrons who disagreed with the results.
“As someone who always goes there, there’s absolutely no way this is true,” read one comment.
Other netizens also took the chance to name their winner, including Alexandra Village Food Centre, Tiong Bahru Market, Chinatown Complex Market & Food Centre, and Golden Mile Food Centre.
Then they were those who think it was Chomp Chomp Food Centre that actually won.
“Maybe people wanted to choose Chomp Chomp but clicked wrongly,” joked wrong netizen.
Chomp Chomp is located across the road from Serangoon Garden Market, and is arguably the more well-known of the two.
