Design is meant to be innovative and thought-provoking, but sometimes it can be so way out that it confuses people.
We assume that’s how you’ll react when you see Singapore Kindness Movement’s most recent merch.
Recently, the non-government non-profit organisation shared on Instagram their newest product: An “exclusive” pair of shorts that’s inspired by our beloved local dish, curry.
The pair of shorts will go on sale on SKM’s website from October 4.
Here’s the thing: How is curry related to kindness?
Well, SKM has a, um, delectable, way of bringing the two together.
“Each culture has its own curry dish with ingredients and ways of cooking specific to that culture. But all curry dishes boil down to the same few ingredients: chilli peppers, curry powder and potatoes. These shorts are testament to the true flavour of living together: a blend of sweet, salty and spicy but ultimately fulfilling encounters with our family, friends and neighbours,” they explained in their caption.
Eh?
If that analogy wasn’t abstract enough, a look at the shorts will make you scratch your head more.
The shorts have a hot pink (why?) waistband set against a bright yellow fabric embellished with prints of what we assume to be herbs and spices. Amidst all that chaos were four crosses formed by red chilli.
We get that the design is a breakdown of the ingredients in curry but we’ll gladly pass on this unappetising dish, thank you very much.
If anything, the design would probably work better as a health warning about the risks of eating too much curry.
Netizens are definitely on the same page as us on this.
“This is testing everyone on their kindness,” joked ex-SGAG content creator Fauzi Azzhar.
A netizen wrote: This is making me rethink the definition of being kind”.
Who knows, maybe this is SKM’s way of seeing who is kind enough to buy something like that for charity?
