Earlier today (Dec 11), ex-Mediacorp actress Sora Ma shared on Instagram that her husband, known only to the public as Mr R, passed away six months ago.
He was said to be 48 when he died.
The 40-year-old Malaysian actress tied the knot with Mr R in 2021. In August, she gave birth to their son, Skye, who was conceived via IVF.
Sora met Mr R, a businessman, through a common friend at the Star Awards in 2012. They became a couple a year later and throughout their decade-long relationship, Sora never revealed Mr R’s face on her social media.
Sora shared that her husband’s passing was “sudden and completely unexpected”. He wasn’t sick and his death caught her “entirely off-guard”.
“This is perhaps the longest I’ve ever taken to process and gather the courage to talk about something,” said Sora. She then apologised for “sharing such news” on her Instagram.
In the past few months, Sora said she’s been through home renovations, the birth of her son, confinement, moving, becoming a first-time mom and raising their child, all of which are things she never imagined she would have to face alone.
“But I’ve been learning to handle everything on my own step by step,” she said.
According to the actress, her life only started to “settle into rhythm” recently, and she finally found the courage to watch a video her husband’s friends made about him.
“I thought I was ready, but the truth is, you’re never truly prepared to face something like this,” she wrote, adding that she’s “gone back and forth countless times” during her grieving process.
“I even asked myself — How could someone as independent as I am become so fragile, so weak?” she said.
Sora, however, acknowledged that, while life took her husband away, it also gave her something else to live for: their son.
“He is the continuation of our love and the reason I find strength to keep going,” she said.
The actress also expressed her gratitude towards her husband and the wonderful relationships he built in his life, as his family and friends have been so “selfless, supportive and loving” to her during this difficult time.
“You have all given me the strength to endure the hardest chapter of my life”, she said, adding that she’s unsure if she could have made it this far without them.
Sora also apologised to her friends for not having the courage to share this news with them in person, and hopes they can understand her silence during this time.
Moving forward, she will do her best to be the person she needs to be, and most importantly, to be the best mum for Skye.
“I’ll continue to learn, to grow, and to live my life as best as I can,” she promised.
Sora also asked for privacy for her family as she does not wish for the announcement to “bring them more pain”. She then apologised to her family for “all the worry [she had] caused during this time”.
“I will be okay,” she said
Many of Sora’s friends have since express their condolences.
“So sorry you have to go through this journey, big hugs. You’re a strong, wonderful mama. Praying all blessings and courage on you, my dear,” wrote ex-Mediacorp actress Eelyn Kok.
Meanwhile, YES933 DJ Siau Jiahui wrote: “If there’s anything I can help with, let me know.”
