The Dragon Boat Festival is just around the corner and if you love rice dumplings, you might want to pay special attention when indulging in those bak zhangs.
Taiwanese radio DJ Suan Chen (陳思安), also known as San San, recently revealed on Threads that her father had choked to death on bak zhang.
The 31-year-old’s dad passed away a year ago and though the cause of death was said to be accidental, he had actually choked while eating a rice dumpling.
“The elders in the family might have felt [the way he died] was very embarrassing, so they told us to say it was a heart attack,” she wrote.
Suan, on the other hand, never considered the incident shameful, but a “very serious issue”.
She urged everyone to be cautious when eating bak zhang, and to ensure the elderly eat slowly and chew their food thoroughly before swallowing.
“It’s very soft but also very sticky, so old folks with weak teeth should be especially careful. Let my father’s death serve as a warning to everyone!” she wrote.
