Stills from the performance have gone viral online, with many netizens balking at the mother-daughter smooch.
“I don’t see a problem with kissing one’s child on the cheek, but she’s kissing her on the lips in the same way a couple would. Her daughter didn’t look super on board with and I felt awkward looking at it,” wrote one netizen.
Another said: “It’s okay if they are sisters, but they’re mother and daughter. I don’t understand why they did that. I’m shocked.”
Others also felt Cai Hua should have respected her daughter’s boundaries, and that she had gone “overboard”.
Cai Hua would later reveal in an interview that the kiss was her idea.
According to Cai Hua, her daughter would always kiss and hug her when she was younger, but she stopped when she got older. So she now appreciates the time she gets to spend with Yuting even more.
We wonder if Yuting sees the gesture the same way?
