It was only a matter of time before news like this surfaced.
A person in Malaysia has just been scammed out of RM20,000 (about SGD 6,080)…due to Labubu. Here’s what happened.
A Costly Online Shopping Scam Involving Labubu Dolls
A young Malaysian Chinese woman recently fell victim to an online shopping scam involving the popular Labubu dolls, losing approximately RM20,000.
According to Chinapress, in August, the victim, who is in her 20s, came across a seller on Instagram offering the trending Labubu dolls. These dolls have been selling out quickly at Pop Mart, leading many to buy them from resellers just to get their hands on one.
The seller’s profile seemed legitimate, with nearly 3,000 followers and positive customer reviews.
Her first purchase went smoothly—she paid RM2,000 (SGD 606) and received an authentic Labubu doll.
Satisfied with the quality and price, she decided to place another order with the same seller. To clarify, the price of these dolls can go up to SGD 1,200, so SGD 606 seemed reasonable.
However, for the second transaction, the seller asked her to split the payment across five different bank accounts.
Trusting the seller based on her previous experience, the victim transferred approximately RM20,000 as instructed.
Two days after making the payments, she noticed something was wrong. There were no shipping updates, and when she tried to contact the seller, she realized she had been blocked.
The victim subsequently filed a police report.
Why Are Labubu Dolls So Popular?
Labubu, a character from The Monsters toy series, was created by Hong Kong-born artist Kasing Lung in 2015. Initially, the character was launched under a different company before securing an exclusive licensing deal with Pop Mart, a blind box manufacturer, in 2019.
In April 2024, BLACKPINK’s Lisa posted about Labubu on social media, sparking massive buying sprees in Thailand and catapulting the character to international fame.
Pop Mart’s blind box format, where buyers don’t know which specific design they’ll receive until opening, also adds to the appeal of Labubu merchandise.
